American culture is a highly individualistic culture that enjoys challenge and competition, and prizes efficiency and decisiveness. The perception is that here in the U.S., unlike in other parts of the world, you can achieve most anything you want—and achievement is what counts: a strong work ethic brings tangible results. In other words, it's a society in which meritocracy plays a large role; it's not who your ancestors were or whom you are connected to that counts—it is what you accomplish.
